Tax New Zealand: Returns remain at Lodge Requested after filing in NZ Tax

Updated this week

When an IR6 return fails lodgement, its status remains at Lodge Requested instead of Lodge Failed. The return has failed to lodge because of one of the following issues in the IR6B and/or IR6S:

  • Missing or incorrect IRD numbers (where applicable).

  • Missing or incorrect TIN information.

  • Empty beneficiary or settlor item in the IR6B or IR6S.

  • Special characters.

Note: If this is an IR6 for the 2021 year or prior, the problem is that the return from Tax Manager does not contain a field for the Beneficiary Birth Dates (or start dates). That field was introduced from 2022 onwards; IRD now requires that data for 2021 and prior years. This return cannot be lodged via Gateway Services and will need to be processed via MyIR.

  1. From The Assessed Returns tab, select the return and click on Update Selected Returns.

  2. Update the return status to New.

  3. Check the IRD number is entered and correct where applicable.

  4. Check that the TIN checkboxes (KP4 and KP13) have been selected appropriately.

  5. Check return for special characters: Check beneficiary and settlor names and addresses, as well as KP12 of the IR6B (Description of other) for special characters such as ampersand &, slashes /\, tilde ~, etc., and remove these.

  6. Empty beneficiary or settlor item in the IR6B or IR6S. For example, in the IR6B, an additional beneficiary record is created with the โ€˜Addโ€™ button, but no data is included.

  7. Save the return.

  8. Lodge the return.

  9. If the return still fails lodgement, please raise a new case online and provide the status of the return, and include the Return's URL.
