Tax New Zealand: Cloud Return Buttons, Functions and Actions

Each button in NZ Tax Cloud performs a specific action within the return lifecycle, from saving data and syncing with the ledger, through to approving and lodging returns.

New Zealand Tax Cloud includes a range of buttons used throughout the return process. Understanding what each button does will help you work more efficiently and confidently when preparing, reviewing, and lodging

Button Functions

Save return

Saves the data entered in the return

Sync to Ledger

Pushes return data back to the desktop ledger

Confirm return

Pulls data from the ledger into the payment summary

Ready to review

Marks the return as prepared and ready for checking; updates transfers and income attribution requests

Generate reports / Create reports

Creates and publishes a report for viewing (button name may vary by location)

Delete reports

Deletes selected reports

Add attachment

Adds an attachment to the return

Prepop

Retrieves income and other details from Inland Revenue

Retrieve IRD status

Retrieves processing status of the return from Inland Revenue

Retrieve IRD data

Retrieves return data from Inland Revenue, if available

Approve return

Finalises the return and queues it for lodgement

Ready to lodge

Marks the return as ready to lodge with Inland Revenue

Lodge return

Submits the return to Inland Revenue

Needs revision / Rework return

Unlocks the return to allow changes (button name may vary)

Amendments (Details tab)

Resets a lodged return to Draft so it can be amended and re‑lodged

📌Note:

  • Some buttons perform the same function but may display different names depending on where you are in the application (e.g. Generate Reports / Create Reports, Needs Revision / Rework Return).

  • The Amendments option is only available after a return has been lodged.

  • Certain actions (such as Approve, Ready to Lodge, and Lodge) follow a sequential workflow and should be completed in order.
